Safety on a Night Out

Written for Wessex Student Magazine

Ah, the classic student night out! A time for relaxing, lots of laughter, and a little too much overpriced vodka lemonade. You’re out there painting the town red. However, it’s essential to keep safety on your radar. Nothing spoils a night like getting lost. It could be worse, like being locked out or having your favourite heels stolen by an enthusiastic dance floor.
Pre-Party Planning: Channel Your Inner Scout

Be Prepared! You know the motto: “Always be prepared.” We’re not just talking about bringing an extra pair of tights. You should, in case of wardrobe malfunctions. Here are a few essential safety tips to tuck into your bag:
Buddy System: Grab your bestie, your roommate, or that one friend who always knows where the nearest bathroom is. Stick together and never leave anyone behind!

Phone a Friend: Not just for emergencies! Before you head out, let someone know your plans. You can even make it a fun tradition: “Tonight we’re going to the club! If I’m not home by 2 AM, assume I’ve been abducted by aliens.” But seriously, keep them updated. Also, consider switching on your location services. This way, you can send your exact location to a trusted friend if you feel unsafe at any point.
Charge Your Phone: You’ll want to take all those Instagram-worthy pics, but make sure yours is fully charged first. Nothing ruins a night like a dead phone. You might need it to call an Uber. Or you might want to look up the nearest pizza place.
Dress Smart: The Style vs. Safety Dilemma

While we all want to look fabulous, comfort is key when it comes to safety. Here’s how to strike the perfect balance:
Choose Your Footwear Wisely: Those sky-high heels may be stunning, but can you sprint in them? Opt for something more practical. This is crucial if you anticipate running from one bar to another. You never know if you’ll suddenly decide to join a spontaneous conga line. After a few happy hour cocktails or cheeky doubles, anything is a possibility.

Pockets Are Your Friends: Leave the tiny clutch bag at home. Choose a bag that can hold all your essentials (and maybe a snack). You might just get hungry or need a little sustenance to soak up the booze. Make sure it’s cross-body style for easy access and to deter thieves!
Navigating the Night: Transport Tips
After you’ve danced and maybe lost your voice singing your heart out, it’s time to get home safely. Here’s how to avoid getting lost in the shuffle:

Know Your Route: Whether you’re walking, taking public transport, or using a ride-sharing app, familiarize yourself with your route beforehand. No one wants to end up in a neighbourhood that looks like it’s straight out of a horror movie.
Ride in Packs: If you’re using a ride-sharing app, make sure you’re not the only one getting picked up. Get your friends together to share the ride, and verify the license plate before hopping in. Bonus points if you pretend to be in an action movie while checking the car out.
Party Smart: Stay in Control
While a little partying is essential for your social life, keeping your wits about you is crucial. Here’s how to maintain your cool while still having fun:

Drink Responsibly: It’s tempting to say “yes” to every drink offered, but pace yourself. Alternating alcoholic drinks with water is a tried-and-true method to prevent hangovers and keep your senses sharp. Plus, hydration is key when you’re busting a move on the dance floor! It also makes sense to not accept drinks from strangers. Only accept a drink if you can see it being poured and it gets put directly in your hand. Keep your drink close at all times, don’t leave it unattended when you nip to the toilet.

Trust Your Gut: If a situation feels off, don’t ignore it. Whether it’s a creepy stranger or that bizarre dance-off challenge, take action to remove yourself. Your instincts are your best friend.
Post-Party Reflection: A Safe Landing
Once you’re back home and snuggled in your bed, take a moment to reflect on the night. Did you have fun? Did you remember to bring your friend back with you? If you got lucky, did you remember to stock up on rubber party hats? You should’ve sorted this out before the party. No one wants an emergency trip to the GUM clinic the next day, it’s better to be heading to lectures with a raging hangover. If the answer is yes, congratulations! You’ve successfully navigated the wild world of a student night out.

And remember, whether you spent the night dancing, or you were deep in conversation about existential dread over overpriced nachos, plan a little. Add a dash of common sense. This can turn a potentially hazardous adventure into a memorable experience. Now go forth and conquer that nightlife—safely!
