Returning to Wickham Festival after a few years away – and stepping onto its spacious new site across the road – we were instantly reminded of why we fell in love with it in the first place. The moment our boots hit the grass (the unusually scorched, crunchy, sun-baked variety this year), we were greeted with a friendly high-five from a giant papier-mâché puppet. That small, whimsical gesture set the tone for the entire weekend, capturing the effortlessly friendly, relaxed, and delightfully unpretentious spirit that makes this event so special.
Tucked away in an undiscovered corner of the Hampshire countryside, Wickham remains a magical melting pot where die-hard folk fans mingle with curious first-timers, and multi-generational local families soak up
the music alongside travellers who’ve journeyed hundreds of miles to be here.
Here is why Wickham got it so right this year — plus a few of our favourite sets from the weekend.
The Vibe: Chill, Safe, and Surprisingly Easy.
Actual Room to breathe: With a daily capacity of 7000, you’re never crammed in like sardines. Attendees comfortably unfold camp chairs and lay out picnic blankets near the Big Top without worrying about getting trampled.
No Marathon walks: Everything is delightfully close. Campsites, car parks, and stages are all within an easy ten-minute stroll, linked by pretty, fairy-lit paths when the sun goes down.
Logistics That just work: Delicious and reasonably priced food stalls, virtually non-existent loo queues, and genuinely lovely volunteer stewards make the experience smooth from start to finish.
Standout Sets & Discoveries
Wickham is all about wandering around and seeing what catches your ear. Here were just some of our absolute highlights:
Nick Parker & The False Alarms
Taking over the Big Top on Friday afternoon, Nick Parker and his band summed up the festival spirit in a single set. Armed with clever, witty lyrics and catchy folk-pop choruses, they had the entire tent grinning within minutes. It was the absolute definition of a “pull up a chair and soak it in” performance.
The Dhol Foundation
A longstanding Wickham staple, Johnny Kalsi and The Dhol Foundation headlined the main stage on Friday night, delivering a wall of traditional dhol drums and thumping bhangra beats that made sitting still completely impossible. Even those glued to their loungers all day were up dancing. They returned on Saturday for a frenetic DJ set complete with audience bhangra lessons—by the end, no one knew their left from their right, but anything goes at Wickham!
The Amy Winehouse Band
Saturday evening brought a dose of pure soul as Amy Winehouse’s original backing band put on a deeply moving, celebratory set honoring her legacy. Far from a cheap tribute act, their world-class musicianship had the entire marquee swaying and singing along to every word of Back to Black and Valerie.
The Proclaimers
Closing out Sunday night, twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid absolutely blew the roof off the Big Top. They had everyone hooked from the opening chords of Letter from America, building up to a soaring chorus of Sunshine on Leith and an ecstatic, arena-wide singalong to I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). Absolute magic.
Nostalgia at the Sunset Stage
For a complete change of pace, the ‘Underground Overground Sunset Stage’ offered pure, unadulterated fun. A massive crowd favourite was Britpop Revolution, who turned the tent into an impromptu ‘90s indie disco. Hearkening back to Oasis, Blur, Pulp, and Supergrass, it was pure high-energy nostalgia.
The Verdict
Wickham Festival 2026 proved that by prioritizing comfort, community, and fantastic music, it remains a rare, sunlit sanctuary for anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the show. It is so much more than just the line-up – it’s a heartwarming summer tradition that keeps us coming back for more.
